Letter: Just because it's the law, doesn't make it right

Writer takes issue with sentencing of man trying to commit suicide, but kills innocent woman

Editor's note: The following letter is in response to the story title “Man sentenced to 15 months after failed suicide attempt left innocent woman dead,” published on Sudbury.com on Jan. 29

This is an extremely sad case and an odd decision by the judge. 

The defence lawyer should challenge this decision. 

Simply because the law does not perceive severe major depression as debilitating to the extent of the depth of depression associated with bipolar disorder, it does not mean that the law is correct. 

My reading of the literature suggests that the depression associated with severe major depression and the depression associated with bipolar disorder do not differ.
