Letter: KED project cries out for a referendum from taxpayers

People are so divided on the project, the only way forward is a vote to settle things once and for all, reader says

The excellent and well-researched Soapbox article by Ian Berdusco on 12 reasons for opposing the KED would have spawned an immense number of comments had they been allowed to be made on Sudbury.com or on its Facebook page. Let me make a couple of comments.

The article on Facebook resulted in 76 Like/Love emoji's presumably in agreement, 28 Laughing emoji's, reflecting against, and five Sad, which could go either way.

I have never seen an article of a similar quality of research and logic presented by KED supporters, certainly not by any councillor that voted for the project, nor any management city staff that is pushing ahead, regardless of all logic and reason, laying out all the economic, logistical, environmental and aesthetic reasons for the project.

All that the PricewaterhouseCoopers second report did was spout theoretical possibilities without any proof that those would come to fruition. A lot of ifs ands or buts. In fact, the second report contradicted the first as to the preferred arena location. Hardly justification for spending a couple of hundred million dollars when all the bills are added up.

The bottom line is that if ever an issue that cried out for a referendum, this is it. Failing that, this council and city management is failing in its fiduciary duty to its citizens.
