In relationships or politics, desperation is never a desirable quality. And right now, the stench of desperation hangs heavily upon the Trudeau Liberals.
Whether it be Prime Minister Justin Trudeau himself or local MPs “mansplaining” to us how we just don’t understand how good we have it with Team Trudeau and how bad the other guy is, or temporary tax holiday gimmicks (as though the country’s economic woes weren’t made worse by their own inept handling of the economy), the Liberals are throwing anything at the wall in hopes that it will stick and reverse their portended 2025 slide into political oblivion.
The latest such Liberal attempt at reversing their political fortunes is yet another new gun ban.
Rolled out just in time for Dec. 6 memorial activities, Trudeau hopes to cash in on that tragedy to boost his flagging political fortunes; while ensuring that he was invited for the photo-ops as he had previously been angrily disinvited for not moving far and fast enough on gun control for the liking of Polysesouvient (a gun control group founded by survivors of the École Polytechnique Massacre).
And while Polysesouvient is pleased with the latest ban (however, they still don’t think it goes far enough), a more measured examination of the list of 324 newly banned unique models of firearms, and Liberal plans associated with them reveal a number of absurdities and inaccuracies that can be attributed to political desperation, or perhaps just gross incompetence.
Firstly, it has been noted that Liberals from Trudeau, through Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc and down to back-bench MPs, have constantly parroted the line that the firearms in question were expressly designed for the battlefield.
This is dead wrong and misinformation of the highest order.
The banned firearms were specifically made to comply with Canadian firearms laws in terms of method of operation, dimensions and ammunition capacity. That some don’t like the look of them is immaterial to the above and the fact that they are Canadian firearms law compliant. What the Liberals are doing is the automotive equivalent of banning some Kia Fortes because they are black, have spoilers and fins attached and are thus “race-car style.”
The Liberals claim that firearms were placed on the ban list because of technical specifications that qualify them as “assault-style”; such as being chambered for centrefire ammunition. Yet, there are many that are simple semi-automatic .22 rimfire rifles no different in functionality from any other .22 semi-automatic rifle and are thus identical performance wise.
There is nothing to differentiate them from any other semi-automatic .22 rimfire save for the fact that they may have add ons that, like a Kia Forte, can give them a racy appearance.
The most glaringly nonsensical statement by the Trudeau Liberals around the list of banned firearms is that they will be sending some to Ukraine to fight the Russians. This is so absurd that it has resulted in the Liberals being savagely memed online.
There is no military on the planet that would accept a hodgepodge of commercial rifles by scores of manufacturers, specifically made with no capacity for automatic or “sustained rapid fire” (another “technical term” used as grounds for prohibition), proprietary magazines limited to five shots, and each with unique parts and servicing needs, for combat use; never mind the fact that many are rimfire rifles.
Equipping soldiers with what the Liberals have on offer would be a disaster for the Ukrainian military logistics train and only cause the collapse of frontline positions.
So, either the Trudeau Liberals are incredibly desperate to cling to power, or they are grossly incompetent. Take your pick. Neither one is a flattering look for them. And, when this latest ploy fails to work, I suspect we’ll see Trudeau reach back inside the Liberal boogeyman bag of desperation and try to scare the electorate with the abortion issue, which in reality is no longer a political issue in Canada, save for in Liberal minds that desperately wish it were.
