Letter: New Sudbury resident says Maley neighbours need a noise buffer

Many families live in the area for the peace and quiet

Do you expect quiet enjoyment of your home? We do … or, we did.

However, with the building of the Maley extension it appears residents of New Sudbury can no longer expect to continue to enjoy the quiet of their community.

We all understand and accept short-term noise during construction, but what happens when construction ends, traffic flows and the noise continues?

Many families in New Sudbury located here for the perceived safe and quiet community.

Now our community is facing a future threat.

The city has committed to a significant investment in the Maley extension (Phase 1, $80 million, Phase 2, $70 million), which means the city anticipates great usage (traffic) of this roadway. This traffic will include many slurry heavy-duty trucks travelling this route.

This means engine acceleration, gear shifting and Jake brakes, all impacting the noise level of our community.

A minimal investment now would have a positive, and dramatic, effect in maintaining the quality of life we have all come to know and expect from our fair city.

Residents of this area would like to see the city build in some sound mitigation measures, to buffer the inevitable and significant increased noise, into this construction project.

Measures could include a berm between the roadway and the residential community it borders, or a line of dense vegetation including trees to absorb sound.

We’re asking for your help. Please let your councillor know that you do not want to live in a noisy city. We all love living in the North and enjoying our outdoor space. Let’s ensure we can continue to enjoy these spaces.

A noise buffer is a small addition to this construction project to provide such a huge benefit to the larger community.
