Letter: PSAC tells striking Steelworkers ‘we’ve got your back’

The concessions Vale has put on the table ‘must all be defeated’

United Steelworkers Local 6500 members on the picket line at the entrance to Clarabelle Mill on Tuesday, June 1.

On May 31, the USW Local 6500 membership resoundingly rejected a tentative agreement with Vale.

Let's be clear, the concessions Vale put on the table and before the membership must all be defeated.

One would think that the company would have learned something about worker and community solidarity during their year-long strike in 2009-2010, but it seems they need a reminder.

As a Sudburian, I recognize that the gains to be achieved by USW members will only strengthen this community's local economy. With nearly 2,500 workers directly impacted, we must also consider those workers' families and the direct spin-off the mines provide in Sudbury and surrounding areas.

Let's be clear. A deal that demands the types of concessions proposed only seeks to divide the members of 6500 and I am happy that they were soundly rejected. Obtaining a 97 per cent strike mandate is no easy feat, but it speaks to the members' solidarity. Vale has prospered because of USW 6500 members and their profits have only increased since their takeover.

USW 6500, we stand in solidarity with you. We've got your back.

In solidarity,

D'Arcy Gauthier
