Letter: Public involvement needed in KED review

‘The public should know exactly what staff will be evaluating and not just rubber-stamping previous city council decisions’

Re: Jan. 12 article "Council meeting cut short, Bigger calls for special projects meeting on the KED."

It was concerning that in opening the abbreviated Jan. 12 council meeting, Mayor Bigger made the unilateral announcement with no motion, no councillor seconding and no discussion or vote, to have staff prepare a report on the KED to be presented at a future meeting, likely in June of this year.

Regardless, I commend the mayor for wanting a fulsome examination, which I hope takes all presented concerns into consideration, including options such as Project Now to renovate the present arena.

I do feel, however, that the public should know exactly what staff will be evaluating and not just rubber-stamping previous city council decisions. This needs to be a transparent process with citizen involvement otherwise public debate will continue.

Any examination should also take into consideration the other big projects, which have raised public concerns as to need and expense. I agree with the mayor, as I am sure do most citizens, that there are other matters that need examination, including the homeless, drug usage and the budget deficit.
