Letter: Senior 'Stayin' Alive' through weekly Legion dance

Dances a great excuse for older folks to get out of the house

A favourite at the weekly Legion dance is "Stayin' Alive," and indeed, letter-writer Gerry Heffernan said the social activity helps the seniors stay truly alive. Supplied photo.

It is very easy for retired senior citizens to confine themselves to their homes to sit around watching television, reading and doing puzzles.

That is why, when a friend suggested the Royal Canadian Legion afternoon dance for seniors, I decided to check it out. I was impressed by the very talented, innovative musicians, the welcoming environment and the smiles on everyone's faces.

The music is provided by Downtown Country, who play a variety of music so well that it is impossible to stay still. As a result, the dance floor is always full of joyful, active people.

Probably, the favourite song that is played is a BeeGee's number called "Stayin' Alive.” Everyone seems to love that one. And we are staying alive — dancing, laughing, and enjoying the music we love.

Many thanks to the Legion, and especially to the volunteers, without whom this would not be possible.
