Letter: Stricter penalties needed for wildlife crimes

I was horrified to read about the cruel manner in which Mr. Clint Geley chased the moose, then used his truck to pin him down and then kill him with his axe

After pleading guilty, Mr. Geley got away with a mere fine.

After reading the article, I noticed that not only was an animal killed in an unacceptable manner, but several hunting regulations were also violated.

As an Ontario resident, I strongly feel that we need to have stricter regulations and penalties when it comes to wildlife crime including a ban from being able to apply for hunting licences to jail time.

I consider myself very lucky to be a resident of Northern Ontario, where we have opportunities to view wildlife in our backyards that many people around the world do not have and will never have; that we have sufficient populations from which we can hunt, so should we not be grateful and treat our wildlife with respect and enact stronger laws for their protection against abuse?
