Letter: Woman takes issue with councillor's 'rude' comments

'Whiners' voted you into office

Letter-writer Lynne Desbiens takes issue with comments by city councillor Gerry Montpellier that she says are rude. File photo.

After being jolted awake at 7 a.m. this morning by yet another old tandem truck bouncing and rattling in and out of the irregular asphalt on O'Neil Drive West in Garson, I read with great interest the article "Whiners drive complaints" in last night's Northern Life.

Trucks are just one of the many problems on our residential street with an elementary school located on it. The quads, dirt bikes and other miscellaneous ATVs with and without mufflers that frequent this street is beyond imagination. We put up with not just the noise, but also the excessive speeds and underage drivers that go along with it.

Contact with councillors, police and bylaw has met with deaf ears (pardon the pun!).

So, Councillor Montpellier, I have a few points to make:

1) Those "whiners" that you so rudely labelled are some of the people who voted you into office, and even if you don't agree with their complaints, it should be handled in a more professional manner;

2) The fact that you have been involved in the motosports industry for 50 years implies to me some sort of conflict of interest;

3) Your statement, “demand for quiet was unreasonable.” What is the definition of unreasonable?

4) “The shortest racing hours in Canada.” I would like to see your report showing every city/town/municipality in Canada and their racing hours;

5) “Let's deal with the happy majority who live in this city.” I live in this city, and I have no recollection of registering my vote as to whether I'm a whiner or happy. Maybe I was out of town during that vote.

I could go on, but I think I've made my point. Just one final comment on the plowing of the roads: keep up the good work and plow when it's necessary, noisy or not.
