Rich get richer, poor go hungry - Bob Daigle

As of March 2005, the Canadian Association of Food Banks estimates there are 13,800 people in Greater Sudbury who have to beg for food-more than 10 percent of the population of Greater Sudbury.

As of March 2005, the Canadian Association of Food Banks estimates there are 13,800 people in Greater Sudbury who have to beg for food-more than 10 percent of the population of Greater Sudbury. And that does not count the people who are too proud to ask for help!

A 2002 poverty report indicated that as many as one in four children live in poverty. That information is three years old and for that period, the same people have been in charge of the city.

During that time city, CAO Mark Mieto received a raise; city managers are paid to take early retirement and stay at home; we have a dysfunctional hospital; Science North gets more funding, and on and on and on and on.

All that misguided money could have made a lot of people, who have no other choice, warm and well-fed.

I suggest, council, instead of pleading with strongly worded letters (to the federal and provincial government) to keep the homeless operations going, send the bills to members of the $100,000 public employees club, and anybody else who kissed up to Mike Harris for funding during the 1990s.

They can easily cover the tab out of their well-lined pockets. They are guilty of allowing this condition to fester into the ugly monster it is.
