In response to your article of Sudburians in
love with Cuba in the Jan. 27 edition, I would like to correct
the requirements of exporting from Cuba. I have gone to Cuba
monthly for 10 years.
Tourists are allowed to export as many boxes
as they wish (25 cigars in each box), as long as the cigars are
purchased at an authorized store. The tourists are required to
show a cash register receipt and a written receipt with their
name on it to show customs while exiting Cuba.
They're also allowed one box of cigars that
are not store bought.
Visitors are allowed to buy as many bottles
of rum and as many boxes of cigars as they wish, but they have
to pay duty if they exceed the limited allowed by Canada
Customs, which is 50 cigars (or two boxes) plus a carton of
cigarettes, and 1.14 litres of liquor.
