I am writing to express my concerns after reading in
Northern Life that the Sudbury Art Council will no longer host
youth concerts.
The Art Council was a very good location for the youth
concerts as it was located in the downtown area where art and
diversity is supposed to thrive and was located next to the
city transit depot. The council is supposed to help facilitate
and promote different activities, yet it will no longer support
providing live music to the public.
The council also was a good all-age venue, which is
difficult to find in Greater Sudbury for a reasonable price,
size and location with easy accessibility.
Money from a fundraiser show had been donated to help
purchase a PA system for the council. Now some of the people
that donated their own money can no longer attend concerts at
this venue.
These youth concerts are attended by over 150 people and
generate good revenues. Parents knew where their children were
and those who loved music had a place to go.
It is time for Sudbury to seriously support its youth in
activities other than traditional sports and get people
involved in cultural. This city is in dire need of artistic
expression and venues!
