Editor's note: The following letter is in response to Erna de Burger Fex's column, “What gives you the right to call me 'honey'?”

I would like you to know a little bit about me before I tell you what I think about your column from Feb. 16 titled “What gives you the right to call me ‘honey’?”

I am a 60-year-young person that has been working in the public for many years of my life, being a school board trustee, working in a store or restaurant, teaching Sunday School, and also being a customer service associate in the local college.

I must admit I am not a writer by any means, but basically give an honest opinion whenever asked, whether it is work related or personal.

This is already a cruel and cold world, and by your article you have contributed to that.

I still work in serving customers and have also been on the other end of being called dear or sweetheart, but you see Mrs. Fex, I for one do not find it condescending or offensive to have received such a comment.

If someone says these words with kindness and a smile, I darn-well will not squash that within their spirit. There are far more better issues in this world to rant about than this.

That is my opinion Mrs. Fex.
