Taxpayer money "is be used to provide the people of this city with basic essential services" - letter writer

Letter-writer Janet says she is disgusted that the words “risk” and “gambling” should be associated in any way with the spending of taxpayer dollars by city council.

Editor's note: This letter is in response to the story, “Council forges ahead with bid,” published Jan. 12.

I am disgusted that the words “risk” and “gambling” should be associated in any way with the spending of taxpayer dollars by city council.

This money is to be used to provide the people of this city with basic essential services, most of which have steadily declined in the past 20 years.

We can not afford this.

Does anyone remember that we hosted the World Juniors in the 1980s and lost millions of dollars?

We may have voted for change, but not the kind we are seeing from this mayor and council.

What we voted for was strong and responsible use and management of taxpayer dollars. This has not happened.

This council has wasted more money foolishly than any council I can remember, while telling seniors there is no money for discounts until 65, no money for free Monday bus rides, no money to properly plow sidewalks for safety reasons, etc.

We did not vote for big dreams, while roads are crumbling and aging sewer lines are breaking.

We will have change at the next election. It is unfortunate that we no longer have three year council terms.

I hope this city is not bankrupt by then.

Unfortunately, rising tax rates and poor services are bankrupting seniors.
