Basically any plant that grows in a place you don't want it to grow is considered a weed. But to commemorate National Weed Appreciation Day, Sudbury.com is honouring five of the least desired, yard invading plants that also taste delicious!
1. Sour-grass
Rumex acetosella also called sheep sorrel or sour-grass can be snacked on straight from the garden. You can sauté the leaves in some butter to make a sorrel sauce that tastes great on seafood or cooked veggies.
2. Daisies
Try making lollipops with daisy heads or other edible flowers like pansies and violets.
3. Red clover
The red clover flower tops are not only used to make medicine for cancer prevention but taste delightful. Add clover blossoms, mint and honey to boiling water to make red clover tea.
4. Wild Amaranth
The leaves of wild amaranth are delicately flavoured when pan fried or added to any dish that calls for leafy greens. Try making this Spiced Chickpea and Wild Amaranth side dish.
5. Dandelions
If you love your salad greens, then the tender inner leaves of dandelion plants belong in your fresh garden salad. Plus, dandelions can be made into wine!
So remember, once the snow melts and gardening season finally returns, love your weeds - they can be delicious!
Happy Weed Appreciation Day!
