As part of Sudbury Arts Council's (SAC's) golden anniversary, the organization invites the public to nominate individuals who have made an impact on the local arts scene in the past 50 years, anytime from 1974 to the present. Self nominations are encouraged.
Individuals may have been prominent in the arts in any number of capacities, through their own artistic work, by involvement in the arts or may have mentored, promoted or financed the arts in meaningful and effective ways.
Nominees could be artists in any area of the arts: visual arts, the written word, music, theatre, dance, sculpture, film etc. They may be living or deceased.
Nominations are for individuals and not organizations.
Those nominated do not need to have actively been artists but must have made a significant impact on the arts.
There will be a book published honouring the 50 selected. The book will be a testament to the importance of each individual. In addition, the Sudbury Arts Council is exploring ways these 50 may be honoured in the new Cultural Hub opening in 2026/27.
An independent jury made up of community members will select the final 50.
Nominations may be submitted in French or in English before April 1, 2025. Individuals may nominate more than one person.
The Sudbury Arts Council was established in the 1970s, during a burst of creative energy that channelled itself into the establishment of the Sudbury Theatre Centre, Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, Northern Lights Festival Boreal, La Slague and the Franco-Ontarian community centre, to name a few.
In 1974, Sudbury Arts Council was born, initially labelled the Sudbury Arts Festival Association to plan an annual spring arts festival and to serve as a “chamber of commerce” for artists.
Over time, SAC's mandate has evolved to Connect, Communicate and Celebrate, with a mission to connect artists, to communicate to the community and to celebrate creativity.
Sudbury Arts Council celebrates 50 years of individuals who have made a difference in the arts at any time over the last five decades.
The nomination form is available on the Sudbury Arts Council's website at www.sudburyartscouncil.ca. Go to “50 People.” The deadline for nominations is April 1.
