A really, really cold jump in the lake for a great cause

More than $27,000 raised in support of Special Olympics Ontario

Ramsey Lake welcomed some of Greater Sudbury's finest to its icy depths Saturday afternoon, for the city's sixth annual Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario.

This year, around 80-90 Sudburians participated in the event, raising more than $27,000 before last-minute registrations.

Among participants was Greater Sudbury Police Chief Paul Pedersen, proudly donning his rubber duck costume having raised his goal of $3,000.

Greater Sudbury is one of what Sgt. Joanne Pendrak estimates to be 25 sites across the province that hosts an annual plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario.

"The Polar Plunge has become a provincial incentive for law enforcement to raise money for Special Olympics," Pendrak said.

Pendrak has been involved with many Polar Plunges and Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, since first taking part 28 years ago.

"One thing evolved into another after I got really close to some of the athletes, and now I coach floor hockey for Special Olympics," she said.

When asked what has motivated her dedication to the Torch Run over the years, Pendrak said for her, it has been the personal connections.

"Even though I have no family that are Special Olympians, I have an entire family of friends."

While confident the event will reach its goal of $30,000 by the end of Saturday, this was not the only motivator that brought upwards of 200 people to the Ramsey Lake boat launch.

It's not every day you see people from all walks of life jumping into freezing water.

"It's a bucket list thing," Pendrak said.

One of the best things "is that is doesn't take up a lot of your time because no one wants to stay in very long - you're in and you're out," she said.
