Would you like to exhibit at the first annual Sudbury Maker Fest at Science North on May 6?

The call for makers is currently open for individuals, groups and businesses who wish to take part in this event. The application deadline is March 31.

Maker culture focuses on learning by doing through trial and error, exploration, problem solving, and practical application.

It stems from DIY culture, Sudbury.com is told, though the idea is more about DIT (doing-it-together) and learning and sharing with others.

"Maker culture appreciates creation over consumerism and it values health, sustainable development, environmentalism and local culture," Sudbury Maker Fest stated in a news release.

Science North and the Greater Sudbury Public Library are partnering to present Sudbury Maker Fest.

This family friendly celebration will highlight many creative projects from the local community along with artists, makers and groups who are involved in “making” in a variety of ways.

“The ‘Maker-Movement’ is growing fast in Greater Sudbury!” said emerging technology librarian Ashley Boucher, in a press release.

“Makerspaces, HackerLabs, and DIY groups are popping up all over the community. Schools, libraries, colleges and private start-ups have been setting up spaces with equipment and tools for people to make stuff, share their ideas and learn from others.”

Science North continually offers a variety of interactive activities and exhibits that promote making with science and technology, and the Greater Sudbury Public Library has a Makerspace of its own in the downtown branch.

“Maker culture and Makerspaces fit naturally with both organizations,” said Science North senior scientist Nancy Somers.

“The intent of this event to foster more of that Maker culture in our communities. Sudbury Maker Fest is the perfect venue to provide our community members with the opportunity to connect with local innovators, artists, and entrepreneurs.”

Applications for exhibitors are available online here.
