Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival has put the call out for young writers to participate in the fifth annual #Youthwords Writing Contest.

High school students are encouraged to send in their best short stories and poems to win a cash prize.

This year features a few special guest judges who will read and judge submissions — Margaret Christakos for the poetry prize and Sarah Selecky for the short story prize.

Both authors were born and raised in Sudbury and now accomplished authors.

They will be reading at the Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival taking Nov. 1-3 at the Clarion Hotel.

“The Youthwords contest is our way of encouraging young writers in the area to be recognized for their work, and to have two notable Canadian writers who hail originally from Sudbury as judges is a bonus,” said Heather Campbell, festival director for Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival.

The contest is open to high school students in the Sudbury area, to submit their best writing in the form of a short story or poetry. Judges are looking for work that is alive on the page rich with imagery and presents a unique vision.

Short Story submissions are a maximum of 1,000 words, and the poetry submission is two poems with a maximum of 30 lines.

There is a cash prize in each category. First place receives $150 and runner up receives $75.

Deadline is Sunday, Oct. 21 at midnight to [email protected]. Visit www.wordstocksudbury.ca for details.
