A&W (named for American founders Allen and Wright) turns 50 this month. The first Canadian A&W opened in Winnipeg in 1956.

The drive-in car service restaurant format was brand new in the 1950s. A&W moved out of drive-ins in the early 1980s and began opening stores in shopping malls. Sudbury's A&W, formerly on Notre Dame Ave., was one of the last with "curbside" service where servers delivered food to patrons in their cars.

Canadians are invited to share their A&W memories. There are three ways to enter: fill out an online entry form ; fill out an entry form at any participating A&W Restaurant; or send your entry to My Favourite Memories at 300-171 West Esplanade, North Vancouver, B.C, V7M 3K9. One grand prize and five regional prizes will be awarded. The deadline is Tuesday, Aug. 8.
