Barrydowne College, an alternative secondary school located at Cambrian College, promotes inclusion and alternatives to students who are not successful in a traditional high school setting.

“Student engagement was heightened by the prospect of showing their work downtown, in a professional setting,” said Sarah Cormier, a professor of Co-operative Education and Visual Art at Barrydowne College.

“Students already have a passion for the visual arts; however, this opportunity took it to the next level. The opportunity to show their hard work to their family, friends and the public is personal and meaningful.”

Leesa Bringas, the Open Studio’s technician and an artist in her own right who holds a graduate degree in fine arts, says shows like Bridging the Gap impart essential life skills to participants.

“It will allow students to develop real-world art skills and abilities. Communication, aesthetics, physical planning and camaraderie are all important and transferable tools, which will build an interesting show, as well as confidence and character,” she said.

Bridging the Gap takes place from 6-8 p.m. June 5, 4-7 p.m. June 6 and 12-4 p.m. June 7-8. Open Studio is located at 93 Cedar St., suite 303.
