Beer lovers flock to downtown festival

It used to be that Brigitte Marceau would very rarely drink beer. But since discovering craft beer, she's developed something of a taste for the frothy alcoholic beverage.

She said she enjoys the different flavours on tap at craft breweries, especially the selections at Sudbury's own Stack Brewing.

“When I travel now, I like to try different beers in different cities,” Brigitte said. “It's very, very interesting.”

Brigitte Marceau and husband Rene were among those who attended the second annual Elgin Street Craft Beer Festival Aug. 9.

“It puts Sudbury on the map,” Rene said. “People think in Sudbury there's nothing happening. Now with the festival, that's another thing. I think it's good.”

Speaking to Northern Life just two hours after the festival's gates opened, organizer Paul Loewenberg said the turnout was looking good.

“It's only 2 p.m., and we're halfway to capacity,” he said. “We're looking to be even busier than last year,” he said.

The festival featured eight breweries from across the country — several less than originally expected, causing a few people to express disappointment. But “generally everybody's been very happy,” Loewenberg said.

Stack Brewing owner Shawn Mailloux said he enjoyed meeting his customers in a relaxed setting. “The weather's warm and the beer's cold, and things seem to be going really well,” he said.

After trying a few beers, Shanna and Dominic Turenne said their favourite was Muskoka Brewery's Twice as Mad Tom IPA. The couple said they definitely prefer craft beer over mainstream beer.

“It's kind of like the difference between a nice, prepared meal at home versus Kraft Dinner,” Dominic said.
