A plate of peanuts, a stormy night and an apple pie are all that is needed to paint the portrait of a loving but unsophisticated family.

In Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario's 33rd annual amateur production, the author relives memories of his childhood — many of which are laugh-out-loud funny. Bonbons assortis, which translates to Assorted Candies, was written by acclaimed playwright Michel Tremblay and is being directed by Hélène Dallaire.

She calls the show “a gust of childhood memories rising to the surface.”

Tremblay, in recalling his own upbringing, remembers listening to the leading ladies in life argue over what to buy their neighbour's daughter when she gets married, or how to set up the Christmas tree.

Dallaire adds that Bonbons assortis “is a great deal of fun.” She invites audience members to “enjoy the play as much as they would a bowl of assorted candies.”

“It’ll be a delightful experience!”

The goal of the TNO’s amateur production is to initiate its participants to the art of theatre by working with professional artists.

Bonbons assortis will be performed at the TNO from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2, 2013 at 8 p.m. A matinee is scheduled for Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
