Book focuses on cancer survivor success stories

The Hilda Pearce Project Hope book was created by the cancer survivor and 35-year Canadian Cancer Society volunteer.

The Hilda Pearce Project Hope book was created by the cancer survivor and 35-year Canadian Cancer Society volunteer.

Pearce's mission was to celebrate the courage of children who have experienced cancer, and their families, through visual media and the written word.

Pearce's will to live is incredible. She's contracted the deadly disease six times during her lifetime.

In Project Hope, 137 Canadian children, five from Northeastern Ontario, and their families share their experiences of pain, joy, courage, strength and determination.

The successes of these children and their families are a source of hope, faith, inspiration and support. They are sure to strengthen the spirit of anyone feeling the effects of cancer in one way or another.

From the mouths of survivors, people can read stories such as the one about two teenage brothers, diagnosed with the same cancer, along with stories of other survivors proudly photographed with their children and hundreds of encouraging messages that will lift any spirit.

The book, which was previously sold at Chapters, is now available at the Travelway Inn across from the Northeastern Regional Cancer Centre, or by contacting the Jan Oystrick Team, ReMax Crown Realty, at 560-5650 or through www.mysudbury.ca

It can also be reserved by calling the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC) directly at 1-888-993-9227 or 693-9227.

Project Hope retails for $25, taxes included. Proceeds from sales go directly to the families talked about in the book.
More good news

In recognition for the help received from the NOFCC during their daughter's treatment, the Monteiro family has chosen to establish a new program under the NOFCC umbrella.

The Shine Bright Scholarship program will provide scholarships for childhood cancer survivors.

Yasmin, 15, has fought hard to beat her cancer, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and realizes the financial impact the illness has on families.

Yasmin believes childhood cancer survivors deserve nothing less than the brightest future and doesn't want their future to be diminished because of financial reasons. Yasmin, along with her family and Dr. Lynn Giroux and her team at the Sudbury Skin Clinic, have begun a fundraising program and are hopeful area businesses will join in as well. The Sudbury Skin Clinic will donate a percentage on all cosmetic dermatology services offered at the clinic until Dec. 16.

These services range from laser hair removal to chemical peels to photodynamic therapy.

To make a donation to the Shine Bright contact the NOFCC at 693-9227 or 1-888-993-9227.
