The number one cause can be attributed to too much noise (ahead of aging, infection or injury, and genetics).

Reader's Digest looks at the top culprits affecting hearing and what can be done to prevent the damage before it becomes permanent.

A recent study conducted in the United States found high school students were even more likely than adults to have symptoms of hearing loss.
