Capreol Days take place this weekend

Greater Sudbury, city of festivals, has yet another community celebration this long weekend.

Greater Sudbury, city of festivals, has yet another community celebration this long weekend.

Capreol Days, starting Friday at 6 pm, has a long history of bringing fun to the 4,000 residents of Capreol and their friends, says Laura Kitchen, co-chair of the popular festival.

"In the past Capreol Days had about 15 years of very
active support in the community, it then died down for a few years but in the last five years we have really blossomed," said Kitchen.

Close to 1,000 people are expected to flock to  venues, including the local ball field, Capreol Arena, Rocky's on Wanapitei Lake and Ella Lake Park, says Kitchen.

"We have events for everyone from teens to tots, adults and seniors," she said.

Teens will be thrilled by the Capreol Battle of the Bands, held at the Capreol Arena Friday.

Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 6:30 pm with Burning Bright. Nine bands are competing include Wolven Ancestry, Wrong Formula, First in Defiance and Shrapnel.

Advance wristbands are $5 available at Capreol Bowl, Homestyle Diner in Hanmer and Records on Wheels downtown. Tickets at the door are $10.

Tots will be entertained at the arena by clowns Saturday from 11 am. Older children can try fishing in the Fish Pond or cool down with sprinklers.

What's new this year?

"For the adults we have the Back Yard Boys featuring lead singer Guy Demore from Capreol, at 8 pm Saturday at the arena. We also have a new venue on Sunday, Rocky's on Lake Wanapitei, site of the Yuk Yuk's evening. If you travel to Capreol Lake where the beach is, just follow the signs to Rocky's," said Kitchen.

Also new is the fitness challenge Saturday morning from 8 am. This is mountain bike challenge at the Capreol cross country ski club.

A yard sale also starts Saturday at 9 am to 3 pm. Pick up maps of the sales at the arena.

"For the seniors we have a soup and sandwich event at the Capreol Seniors Club Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm with music by the Downhomers," said Kitchen.

On Monday all events are at Ella Lake Park.

"We have a horseshoe tournament, beach ball tournament and bouncing Merryland bounce-abouts all starting at 11 am. We also are fundraising for the park by taking part of the proceeds from the Beverage Tent for park improvements, specifically for a gazebo shelter."
