The Sudbury Design Society highlighted some of the city's most outstanding creative talent during the Sudbury, Design to Art (SD—A) Gala and Builders' Night.
A new initiative, the SD—A awards were created to give local designers, artists, animators, photographers and architects the opportunity to submit their work for exhibition.
“Sudbury is experiencing a creative boom, and we think it's time to start bragging,” said Frank Chartrand, SDS president. “The Sudbury Design Society invited local creative professionals and students to submit work to the first annual exhibition of the best our community has to offer, design to art.”
There is no shortage of vibrant work — the SDS simply wants to showcase it, in all its facets.
“This was not only open to designers, but to anyone who did something creative,” said Chartrand. “Whether it be video production, interior design, website/app design, branding, etc.
“We solicited work completed between 2010 and 2012, which was thoroughly reviewed by the expert panel of jurors we assembled,” he said.. “The panel was carefully composed to include local representation, industry leaders, educators, and the business community. The result is an exhibition that showcases the best in student and professional work across the full gamut of Sudbury’s creative industries.”

The purpose of the Builders Awards was to acknowledge the individuals who have positively influenced the design industry in Sudbury.
On May 23, the SDS presented Builders awards to John Stefura, a renowned local architect whose work has helped shape Sudbury, as well as Karen Haynes, a local designed with more than two decades of experience.
“The SDS Builders' Award was created to honour the contribution of individuals in our community who have positively propelled the design profession in Sudbury,” said Chartrand. “This award continues to fulfil SDS's mandate of promoting the importance of design in our community.”
