Dickens' classic novel comes to life in Theatre Cambrian's 'Oliver'

Musical with cast of 27 hits the stage May 3-13

Lionel Bart's classic musical based on Charles Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist, runs at Theatre Cambrian May 3-13.

Oliver features a cast of 27 and is directed by Mary Anne Fraser.

“Theatre Cambrian is very excited to welcome Mary Anne Fraser and her cast and crew to the Theatre Cambrian stage,” said Theatre Cambrian vice-president Derek Young, in a press release.

“We are humbled by the quality of the cast, their hard work and dedication to community theatre.”

Fraser brings a fresh energy to the organization and helped to recruit a cast of new and experienced theatre performers to our stage.

The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike.

The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker.

Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in.

Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.

"I am so excited for you to watch this cast of talented, wonderful amazing people,” Fraser said.

“So many first timers that are naturals on stage — the youngest is six years old. I have always loved this musical and to bring it to life as the director has been my dream come true.

“My talented team has been there from day one and I'm so blessed to have them with me on this journey.”

Tickets for Oliver are on sale now at the Theatre Cambrian Box Office and online starting at $20. Visit www.theatrecambrian.ca or phone 705-524.7317.
