Students and faculty in Thorneloe University's Motion Picture Arts program have an “impressive presence” at this year's Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival, which is taking place this week.
Finalists in Cinéfest’s “CTV Best in Shorts Competition” include two shorts by current MPArts students, and one from a former student.
All three productions were assignments produced in the course titled Production II, the second of the three core production courses in the MPArts program.
Current MPArts students Masha Potapov and Zahra Golafshani will screen their shorts “Couple of Friends” and “Private Sessions” respectively. This is Potapov’s first showcase of her work at a festival.
Golafshani’s screening will mark her third consecutive year at Cinéfest. In each of the two previous years, she received an award for her work. Potapov and Golafshani are currently enrolled in Production III.
In that course, they will produce numerous shorts over the current academic year, one or more of which hopefully will premiere at next year’s edition of Cinéfest.

“Observations.” All screenings are at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 24.
The fifth and latest chapter of the experimental drama “Perspective” will premiere at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 23.
Subtitled “Variations on a Love Triangle,” “Perspective” is unique in that it is a film in progress, and will continue to evolve until 2020. Every year since 2012, a new chapter has been presented exclusively at Cinéfest.
Each chapter runs approximately 10-20 minutes, with the completed film expected to be two hours, and the time lapse between chapters is integrated into the narrative.
“Perspective” features three local actors — Stef Paquette, Pandora Topp and Patricia Tedford. Because the film is being shot over nine years, the actors — and characters — will age on screen.
The entire faculty of the MPArts program is involved in the production along with all of the MPArts students.
Thorneloe University MPArts Instructors Jason Jallet and Benjamin Paquette are producers on the science fiction family film "Darwin," which screened Wednesday at the festival.
In addition, Jallet is a producer on the France-Canada co-production “Fishing in the Moonlight” that screened this past Sunday, and the two features "Jean of the Jones," which screens Sunday, September 25 at 2 p.m., and "Two Lovers and A Bear," which screens Saturday, September 24 at 9:30 p.m.
All screenings are at SilverCity Sudbury Cinemas.
