The Sudbury Art Club hosts its annual fall show and sale this weekend at Carmichael Community Centre.

Funded by a Healthy Community Initiatives grant from the City of Greater Sudbury, the event kicks off with a wine and cheese reception from 7-9 p.m. on Nov. 1. Doors open at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3.

Everyone is welcome and admission is free all weekend.

There will be a raffle of original paintings held during the event with all donations going to the Sudbury Food Bank.

“This exhibit will feature a diverse array of original art for sale from its more than 100 members,” club president Carmen Martorella said in an email to Sudbury.com. “Smaller items such as painted book marks, small pieces and cards will also be available. Art speaks to the soul and when you see an original work of art that evokes such a feeling, it was meant to be just for you.”

Martorella has been a member of the club for 15 years and is “so impressed by the multitude of the great talent in the Sudbury area.” She said she recalls many years ago attending one of the club’s shows at the YMCA and dreaming she could show her work some day and get to that artistic level.

She said art is for everyone. “You don’t have to be great to start. You just have to start to be great,” Martorella said. After all, she said, the club's mission statement is to foster the creative talents of Sudbury Art Club members and to promote the appreciation in the community.

Active since 1945, the art club counts as distinguished members artists such as Ivan Wheale, Bruno Cavallo, Oryst Sawchuk and many others.

Club membership is open to anyone. Annual membership fee is $50.  The club meets Tuesdays and Wednesdays for open painting and workshops, and hosts weekend workshops with talented artists.

As part of the Northern Ontario Arts Association, the club participates in the juried exhibit that yearly travels across the North. This year, nine paintings from members of the Sudbury Art Club were selected for the show, which takes place March 2020 at the Carmichael Center in Sudbury.
