Welcome to another fun week in Sudbury. Don't you dare complain about the lack of innovation or fun things to do in this town until you read this.
On March 18, you can join the city in a community art project hosted by Artists on Elgin at Tom Davies Square. The crew at AOE has taken an original Greg Taylor photograph and marked it up with a grid. They've also got a giant canvas and paint brushes ready. All you have to do is show up between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and you'll be able to contribute to the piece. It doesn't matter how artistic or not-so-artistic you are — they have some professionals on hand to help you out.
The finished piece will be on display at Tom Davies for the first half of the week.
You might also want to check out the latest Sudbury Theatre Centre show The Clockmaker, opening March 21. It's written by a New Yorker who studied graphic design at Cambrian College before moving to the big city. Stephen Massicotte will be making the trek north to watch his production open up at the downtown theatre. It's not too often a playwright is around to see his show on stage — pretty cool. There's an interesting Francophone concert coming to the city this week, too. On March 22, (take a deep breath if you plan on reading this entire list at once) Marie-Claire and the Hula-Hoops, Lanorme, Patrick Wright et ses Gauchistes Les DJ Masqués, Mehdi Cayenne, Mastik, Pandaléon and Konflit are playing all around Collège Boréal. Like, all around. Stages will be set up in some pretty odd spots on campus. Sounds like one great show, that only costs $15 for students and $20 for grown-ups. One last thing worth checking out in the next few days is the FiveForArt project put on by Cambrian College students. They have an autographed script of the Broadway show Born Again up for grabs, signed by Claude Akins of BJ and the Bear TV fame. If you weren't watching TV in the 70s, that reference may have went over your head, too. But nonetheless, its for a good cause. Proceeds from the script will go to support the YMCA Strong Kids campaign, and help fund some Cambrian scholarship funds. Win-win.
