GNO exhibit combines photography, poetry of Mary Green

The public is invited to the March 7 opening reception for Evocation, Sudbury artist Mary Green’s new multimedia exhibition at Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario (GNO).
The exhibit continues until April 19.

Green is no stranger to the Sudbury art scene, having lived and worked in the city since the early 1980s.

Even though her practice has always been eclectic, incorporating a wide range of forms of expression, Evocation showcases a new aspect of Green's creativity: her poetic writings.

The new exhibition is an immersive experience of sorts. A series of 15 photographs, each are paired with an aural poetry soundscape presented through headphones.

The poems, written by Green and read by Sudbury poet Kim Fahner, also feature sound design from local sound artist Dan Bédard and music from musician Tom Byers.
Each of the recordings accompanies a specific photograph and allows the visitor to more fully explore the world to which each photograph leads.

Paul Walty is the guest curator invited by the GNO to reflect upon Green’s exhibition. Most of all, it was the spare beauty of Mary Green’s poetic works that struck him.

“Each work is a brief excursion, wrought with a clustering of words and phrases polished to slow perfection,” said Walty in the curatorial text that accompanies the exhibition at 174 Elgin St.

“I write in response to patterns of images, woven webs that live inside my head with me,” said Green.

“Pairing these internal images with external images drawn from my photographic practice completes the web, helping me to join my physical surroundings. Through personal reflection I reach for the universal.”
