Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario Centre d'Artistes (GNO) will be
holding a series of events today to celebrate 10 years of
trailblazing. It is the only artists-run visual arts gallery in
Sudbury and the only Franco-Ontarian artist gallery in
northeastern Ontario.
Three special events will serve as a retrospective of
members' work and as a look at where the organization is
heading in the future.
The first event is an an hour-long projection of images by
the various artists who have exhibited at GNO. The projection
of images will be followed  by a conference where the
audience will participate in fielding questions to artists and
curators who have been active in the support of GNO.
These events will be followed by the opening reception of the Bookwork exhibition, a project that attempts to show what the purpose and the concept of books mean to each of the artists.
The reception will be held at the Rainbow Centre.
"The exhibition will be an interesting twist on what each
artist sees as a visual representation of the concept of
books," said Danielle Tremblay, a founding member of GNO. "I am
pleased with the way the event is shaping up. GNO thrives
because of the people involved. It's an artist-run centre, and
without them, we wouldn't be able to function."
Some of the pieces that are being unveiled include a piece
by artist Heather Topp that shows a series of images with hands
open holding a variety of objects.
"I've placed different objects in each pair of hands," Topp
said. "It's to create the concept of holding something in your
hands, the way you would hold a book, and within each pair of
hands is a story that is told by the object they are holding."
After the initial display as part of the French-language
book fair, the exhibit will move to GNO on Elgin St. from May 9
to June 17.
The exhibit can be viewed at GNO's website

.
"I've attended almost every opening GNO has put together, and I certainly won't miss this one," said Ron Langin, a long-time supporter. "It's a great organization. It's at a great location, right in the cultural renaissance of Sudbury.
