A unique campaign encouraging people to eat colourful vegetables and fruit at every meal is back for a second year.

The Sudbury and District Health Unit is, for the second consecutive spring, sponsoring Paint Your Plate. Create a Masterpiece.

The campaign encourages people of all ages to eat an array of colourful vegetables and fruit as a regular part of their diet.

Throughout April, health unit staff will be holding promotional events at local grocery stores. These events will feature food tasting and information displays. Shoppers will also have a chance to enter a prize draw.

Campaign resources and information will also be made available to day-cares, schools and workplaces.

Low vegetable and fruit intake has been linked to higher risk for heart disease, stroke, hypertension and the development of certain cancers, such as colorectal and prostate.

Recent research shows area residents do not eat enough vegetables and fruit as a part of their regular diet and this reinforces the need for promotional efforts to encourage consumption of these foods.
