A series of upcoming jazz concerts will be used to help replenish the funds in the Joan Mantle Music Trust.

The series kicks off with a performance by the SBQ Trio, which is comprised of Jack Broumpton on drums, Tony Simpkin on piano and Brian Quebec on bass on Feb. 11.

Other concerts include Del Dako and the SBQ Trio on March 2, Lance Anderson and the B3 Organ Trio on April 14 and Elena Kapeleris and the SBQ Trio on May 12, 2012. All of the visiting artists have a Sudbury connection — they either grew up in the Sudbury area or have performed here in the past.

The Jazzworkz Series was created by Broumpton. As a longtime music teacher, he said he has first-hand knowledge of the importance of music education.

“The series will highlight the efforts of the Joan Mantle Music Trust and the great results it has produced to support music programs in Rainbow schools,” he stated.

It's not the first time Broumpton has taken on such a task.

“Back in 1986, I wanted to raise the profile of the Jazz program at Huntington College and Laurentian University, so we invited award-winning Canadian jazz artists to Sudbury to perform with local musicians,” he stated. “That’s what we’re doing now, to raise the profile of jazz performance in the community.”

Each concert will be held at St. Peter's Church, located at 203 York St. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased to each show for $15 for students and $20 for adults, or $70 for the entire season. Tickets are available at Black Cat and Hair to Live For in the Cedar Pointe Mall.
