June 15 is day for seniors

The Sudbury Elder Abuse Committee will recognize the inaugural World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) Thursday June 15. A free brunch will be free for seniors at the Legion Hall Branch 76 in Minnow Lake, 1553 Weller St. from 11 am to 2 pm.

The Sudbury Elder Abuse Committee will recognize the inaugural World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) Thursday June 15.

A free brunch will be free for seniors at the Legion Hall Branch 76 in Minnow Lake, 1553 Weller St. from 11 am to 2 pm.

The day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.

Lorraine Mercer, committee member, says, "We are asking individuals and families to participate in the provincial Global Moment of Reflection June 15 that will unify communities across Ontario in recognizing those older adults who have experienced abuse or are living in abusive situations."

Community organizations, religious groups, professionals in the field of aging, interested individuals as well as older persons themselves to are asked to participate to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by taking part in this day.
