There are lots of new activities for all ages, along with old
favourites such as minnow races, a baseball tournament, the
Blueberry Idol contest, food concessions and vendors at Minnow
Lake Days.
The weekend of family festivities starts (today) Friday at 4
pm and continues Saturday and Sunday at Minnow Lake Place on
Bancroft Dr.
"We have a poker run and penny tables, and new this year are
public information sessions Saturday and Sunday," says
organizer Betty Turgeon says.
Representatives from the Sudbury and District Health Unit will present a talk on sun safety matters at 11 am and another on West Nile virus at noon Saturday. Sessions on other topics are also scheduled.
Child Find representatives will be on site Sunday at 2 pm to
help parents put together an identification package for
children.
"We've changed some of the kids' activities to more
traditional games," Turgeon says. "Things like scavenger
hunting, relay races, Texas horseshoes, tire rolling races will
keep them active and busy. They just have to show up to enter."
There is a silly dog show Sunday from 10 am to noon. Don't
worry if you can't locate Rover's pedigree papers, prizes go
for categories such as the smallest, ugliest, best dressed and
the one who looks most like its owner.
Tonight singer/songwriter Kevin Closs headlines the opening
night show. Closs will perform favourites from his original
folk/pop repertoire for an hour-long concert starting at 6 pm
at Minnow Lake Place in the gymnasium.
The Blueberry Idol contest will follow at 7 pm. Admission
for the entertainment is $10 per family (up to five people) or
$5 each.
There will be free musical performances Saturday and Sunday
from local artists Aimee Leonard, Shane Daniels, Courtney
Bruneau, Kristen Brutto, Chris Newman and Ricky Stone. Dates
and times are listed on the website
www.minnowlake.ca
.
Breakfast is available at 8 am Saturday and Sunday. Traditional
pancakes will be served Sunday but on Saturday people are
invited to try the new Sud-berry breakfast sandwich being
prepared by Neater Eater.
Turgeon says the Sud-berry sandwich is a scooped-out bun with French toast mixture inside. It is toasted from the inside using a cooking rod, then filled with fresh blueberries, yogurt and maple syrup and topped with whipped cream.
For every Sud-berry sandwich sold, $1 will be be donated to
the festival.
