Latitude 46 launches 4th poetry book, Claimings and Other Wild Things

Noelle Schmidt is a disabled, queer, non-binary poet. Their book will be launched on April 23

Sudbury Publisher Latitude 46 has announced they are releasing their fourth poetry collection Claimings and Other Wild Things by Noelle Schmidt.

Noelle Schmidt is a disabled, queer, non-binary poet. They graduated from Western University, having received the Alfred R. Poynt Award in Poetry, the Margeurite R. Dow Canadian Heritage Award, and the Western Gold Medal. Their poetry can be found in Symposium, the Wordsfest Frankenzine, and Déraciné Magazine. Their creative non-fiction can be found in Common Mag.

“Young, queer and from northern Ontario is a voice we want to share with the world,” said Heather Campbell, publisher for Latitude 46 Publishing. “Noelle Schmidt’s poetry is vulnerable and skilled with much promise.”

Claimings and Other Wild Things is described in a release as an “eclectic collection of intimate poetry that delves into mental health, suicide, queerness, and identity. Who am I? How did I get here? And how do I keep going?” These are the central questions explored. Childhood innocence to adolescent depression, these poems are “sombre and brooding, yet flavoured with determination and accented by sparks of hope.”

A launch is scheduled for Saturday, April 23 from 2–4 p.m. at Sudbury Indie Cinema (162 MacKenzie St.) and will also be livestreamed. Books will be available for purchase at the launch for $20 or can be ordered from a favourite bookseller.
