Just three months after it opened to largely negative reviews, producers of the $28-million Lord of the Rings stage show have announced it will close in Toronto Sept. 3.

A financial analyst who tracked the theatre industry quite closely until production company Livent Inc. went into bankruptcy protection in 1999 said it sounded like the show was not covering the costs or recouping investment.

A revamped version will reopen next May 9 in London, England. So far only actor James Loy, who plays Frodo in the Toronto production, has been confirmed to accompany the production overseas. Full casting will be announced in September.
