Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, which is coming up May 6, will feature the best of Sudbury’s jazz and classical musicians in a delightful mix of big band and symphonic repertoire.

Guest artist Christian Overton is a celebrated jazz trombonist and prolific composer.

He has composed a piece for the occasion entitled "Landscape Dreamscapes,” dedicated to the scenic vistas of northern Ontario.

This colourful composition features virtuosic trombone improvisations within a jazz-infused symphonic backdrop. It is an extremely unique blend of vivid orchestral colours, exciting jazz rhythms and thoughtful momentum.

Equally accessible to symphony and jazz audiences, this event will surely be an evening to remember.

For this concert, the guest conductor is the Sudbury legend Dick Van Raadshooven.

He has put together a concert that demonstrates the connections between Classical and Jazz music and gives our local musicians the opportunity to show how brilliantly they can cross these genres.

The audience will also see many of these same classical musicians reconstituted as the Sudbury Jazz Orchestra, backing local soloists: Al Walsh, Sarah Craig and Alessandro Constantini.

“This concert has been in the works for a couple of years and it has turned into a huge undertaking of musicians and staging conundrums,” said the press release.

“Musicians today are educated in all genres of music and can switch from classics to pop to dance to jazz. The audience at this concert will be awed by the diversity of talent, grown and educated on these rocky shores. We hope that this concert encourages more music, more music education and more musicians in our community.”

The concert runs May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium.

Tickets are available through the STC box office, 705-674-8381 or at the door.
