Ten years ago, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) launched Art in Bloom. The day-long event was started to raise both awareness and funds for the association.
The art show has grown to attract nearly 700 people on an annual basis, and brings in between $10,000 and $13,000.
Chantal Makela, co-chair of the Art in Bloom committee, said all funds go back to supporting the agency.
The CMHA provides referrals to addiction services, mental health services, provides short-term assistance to the mentally ill and is about to launch a temporary housing program for near-homeless people.
Makela said more than 300 people in Greater Sudbury are serviced by the agency.
A number of local artists provide a percentage of the sale price of their work to CHMA at Art in Bloom. One of those artists is Gregory Maskwa.
The painter, who is faced with chronic pain and depression, said he decided to get involved because he believes in the cause.
Maskwa said just because someone is faced with a mental illness, doesn't mean they can't be a “creative and dynamic” contributing member of society.
Other artisans will be showcasing jewelry, clothing, pottery, photography, preserves, stained glass, and wooden furniture at the fundraiser. A silent auction will also take place.
Art in Bloom takes place at Minnow Lake Place, located at 1127 Bancroft Dr. on June 5 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $12 and at the door for $15.
