A little more than a year ago, in November 2015, Sudbury band Murder Murder was involved in a one-vehicle crash in Saskatchewan after their 12-passenger van and trailer hit black ice.

While the van's seven passengers walked away mostly unscathed, the van and trailer were destroyed.

It's no wonder that this winter, Murder Murder has decided to escape Canada's inclement weather and tour elsewhere.

The band, known for its unique blend of bluegrass and outlaw country, is heading out on a month-long tour of Europe this week, playing engagements in countries including the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and England.

The trip is centred around an exciting opportunity — Murder Murder is one of only 18 acts selected to showcase at the 2017 Americana Music Association UK Conference and Awards in London.

The band is hoping to build up a fan base in Europe so they can do future tours there, said Geoff McCausland, Murder Murder's fiddle player. They already did a tour in England last spring.

“It's an exciting market to develop for the band,” said McCausland.

“There's a lot of opportunities to play there and a real fascination with Americana music of all different kinds, especially in places like Germany and the UK.

“We're excited to take advantage of that. We learned as well that touring in Canada in winter is a horrible idea … This was us trying to continue touring throughout the year while hopefully avoiding the snow and ice.”

The band's drummer, Stef Duchesne, said he's looking forward to sightseeing. Classically trained in music, he said he's excited to visit places important in western musical tradition.

Upon the band's return to Sudbury, Murder Murder will be recording its third full-length album, to be released in May 2017.
