If you’re a fan of the Sudbury Wolves, you may want to pick up a copy of Latitude 46’s latest release.
The local publisher is coming out with a book by local author Scott Miller called “Leading the Pack: 50 Years of Sudbury Wolves History.”
The book incorporates both historical documents and interviews with players, staff, and others closely involved with the franchise over the years.
Miller completed his BA and MA in history at Laurentian University and has published articles on the history of Sudbury in the Canadian Historical Review, Ontario History, and the Canadian Military Journal.
In 2019, Miller, along with co-author Mark Kuhlberg, received the Riddell Award from the Ontario Historical Society for the best article published on the subject of Ontario history in 2018.
Along with being a fan of the Sudbury Wolves, Miller also supports the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Bills.
Miller explains that the book was originally conceived as a group project along with local academics Kuhlberg and Mike Committo (whom you might know from his popular book “Hockey 365”), who he met while doing his master’s degree in history at Laurentian University.
But the two other men had to bow out of the project due to other commitments, so Miller decided to forge ahead as the book’s sole author.
Growing up in Sudbury, Miller said he’s been a lifelong Wolves fan, so he’s excited he was the one to be able to document the team’s 50 years in the community — at least, its current franchise.
“I believe a lot of people, like myself, will say ‘If you go to the Sudbury Arena, you see the 1932 Memorial Cup champion banner. How are we celebrating 50 years when we’ve apparently won a Memorial Cup?’” he said.
“We’re celebrating 50 years of the current franchise, but there were several Sudbury Wolves teams that existed here in Sudbury.”
The 200-page book covers the big wins, heartbreaking losses, rise of future National Hockey League stars such as Marcus and Nick Foligno, colourful personalities, and devoted fans who have played their part in shaping the history of the Sudbury Wolves.
It includes interviews with Randy CarIyle, Joe Bowen and Bud Burke, the founding owner of the franchise.
Miller said he believes the Wolves history book is a “perfect fit” for Latitude 46, which publishes works by authors with a connection to Northern Ontario, or who are writing about the region.
“A local publisher would probably better understand the significance of it than maybe a publisher from out of town,” he said. “So it worked out really well.”
