New sushi place goes high-tech with roll machine and tablet menus (photos)

Wasabi Sushi now open in New Sudbury

With a state-of-the-art sushi roll machine and tablet menus, all-you-can-eat sushi just got more high-tech.

Wasabi is Sudbury's newest sushi restaurant and specializes in Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes.

Aside from serving typical dishes like sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi - owners Jolie Nguyen and John Law have created signature rolls named after a few of the other restaurants that they own in Greater Sudbury, such as Lot 88, Overtime Bar and Grill and Social House.

A great feature at Wasabi Sushi is the electronic menu ordering system.

When guests sit down they are given a tablet to place their order. The menu includes photos and a list of ingredients.

"It's just like online shopping," Nguyen said. "When you're done, your order is sent directly to the kitchen and we can get our food to the table more quickly."

With the tablet, guests can order an unlimited amount of times. So if you still have room for one more spicy tuna roll you don't have to wait for a server to take your order. And when you're done you can use the tablet to let the server know you're ready for your bill.

But what really makes Wasabi unique is the sushi roll machine and cutter. Not only is it quicker but it makes the rolls more uniform with a consistent amount of rice and cuts it in perfectly bite-sized pieces. Watch the video below to see the Suzumo in action.

"Sushi is actually a work of art. Presentation is very important," Nguyen said.

A big complaint in other places is that there's too much rice, not enough rice, the cuts are too big or too small. This state of the art machine eliminates that."

The grand opening of Wasabi Sushi takes place June 13 at 7 p.m.

Wasabi Sushi is located in the former Osaka restaurant at 1899 Lasalle Blvd., and is open 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday. It's closed on Sunday.
