North Bay entrepreneur brings Twiggs coffee franchise to Sudbury

'We didn't think we were going to be this swamped,' says cafe's owner

The owner of Sudbury's new Twiggs Coffee Roasters franchise said he knew the restaurant was probably going to be popular, but he didn't have any idea of just how enthusiastic Sudburians were going to be.

“We knew we were going to be busy, but we didn't think we were going to be this swamped,” said David Russell.

Twiggs opened its first store in North Bay a little more than two decades ago.

It's since opened a second North Bay store, another in Sturgeon Falls, and now the Sudbury cafe, located in the same recently built development on The Kingsway as Microtel Inn and Suites, across from Chapters.

The restaurant, featuring a patio overlooking The Kingsway, serves fresh-roasted coffee and other hot drinks, desserts, a full breakfast menu, sandwiches, soups, thin-crust pizzas, cheese platters tapas, wine and beer and more.

“I think we've sold near on 1,000 pizzas in a week,” Russell said.

A resident of North Bay who's moving to Sudbury because of his new business, Russell said the Twiggs name is not an unknown in the Nickel City.

“Sudbury is not that far from North Bay,” he said.

“There's a lot of people who live around here who know of Twiggs. So therefore it's easier to find people who know and love Twiggs. That made it an easy, I think, to expand to this area.”

Russell, who said he's already hiring 25 to 30 mostly part-time workers, said he's looking to expand his business to catering, which is something the North Bay Twiggs stores are involved in.

With extensive opening hours each day, Russell said Twiggs has already become something of a hangout for students and people going to the movies in that area of town.

It's open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
