Sudbury's Dayv Poulin and North Bay's Loni Konkal are both the kind of people you'd like to have around when you're sitting around a campfire with family or friends.

“To both our circles of friends, we were both known as having really awesome lyrical memories,” said Konkal. “I think (Poulin was) called the human jukebox, and they would always call me the human radio.”

Three years ago, Poulin, a well-known, award-winning musician who typically writes and performs in French and Konkal, a schoolteacher who's always entertained at family gatherings but hadn't done much musically beyond that, were introduced by friends.

They hit it off and started jamming, penning original tunes and playing small gigs together. “Our voices blend really, really well together,” said Poulin.

The musical duo, who have dubbed themselves the Cabiners, recently put out a cover of Nazareth's 1975 hit song “Love Hurts.”

The bare-bones version of the tune features Poulin playing the guitar (and whistling at one point) and both musicians singing.

Poulin and Konkal are thrilled with the response — it's received 25,000 views on their group's Facebook page since they put it up Aug. 31, and a further 2,800 views on YouTube.

They've received positive comments from around the world.

“Loni and I, we have so much fun playing, and people will tell us that all the time,” Poulin said.

“We're constantly smiling or laughing and just really, really enjoying what we do. I think that transcends, and people are connecting to that too in the video.”

Keep an eye on the Cabiners' Facebook page — they say they plan to release more tunes — both covers and originals, and see where that takes them.
