Party like a Greek

Known for their love of food and dancing — and of life in general — Greeks really know how to throw a good party, said Sophia Moutsatsos.

The 21st annual Greek Festival, which runs July 25-27 at the Hellenic Centre, just happens to be one where the whole community is invited, she said.

“You don't have to be Greek to attend,” said Moutsatsos, one of the festival's organizers. “It's just for everyone.”

Doors open at 4 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. All festivities run into the late evening. Admission is free.

One of the highlights of the festival is always the traditional Greek food, including moussaka, souvlaki and spanakopita.

Moutsatsos advises people get to the festival early if they want to purchase Greek desserts, including baklava and diples.

The festival also includes Greek music, children's activities, tours of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and a boutique with authentic Greek souvenirs for sale, such as jewelry and hats.

The Sudbury Hellenic Dancers — of which Moutsatsos is a member — will be performing, along with a guest Greek dancing group from Ottawa.

It's great being Greek, she said.

“Oh my gosh, we have all the stereotypes,” she said. “The loudness, the boisterousness. Everyone's really loving. It's good.”
