This week the City of Greater Sudbury has been encouraging the
community to be green by participating in Commuter Challenge
Week.
The challenge is a friendly competition between Canadian
cities to encourage drivers to walk, cycle, skate, use public
transit or carpool.
Doing any of these can help make significant changes in
greenhouse gas emissions. According to
www.commuterchallenge.ca
, it takes 130 trees to produce enough oxygen to fight carbon
dioxide emissions for a single car throughout the year.
"It (the challenge) is environmentally friendly and good for
your physical health as well," said Jeff Pafford, City of
Greater Sudbury community development co-ordinator.
The challenge week ends tomorrow with two special events at
Bell Park. The second annual Tour de Sudbury will start at the
Grace Hartman Amphitheatre at 9 am. The tour involves a
26-kilometre ride that will feature new bike paths through
Minnow Lake and along Paris St. Shorter routes are available
for families and novices.
The Wiserider program will run from 10 am to 2 pm at the amphitheatre. The program will teach young cyclists safety tips and cycling skills. There will also be a free M&M Meat barbecue. For more information, visit www.commuterchallenge.ca .
