The dean of social sciences and humanities at Laurentian University made a personal donation to the school's Department of Music.
Thanks to $25,000 from Dr. Elizabeth Dawes, the school now has a brand new grant piano for student and faculty use.
Dawes said a piano is a lot like a car — after about a decade, it's time to start thinking of a new one. That's why she opted to make the donation from her own chequebook.
“Although not a musician herself, Dawes’ childhood was filled with the sounds of instruments and vocal harmonies,” stated a media release from LU. “Her father has been performing in a choir for decades while her mother was a talented accompanist.
"Her siblings were also musically inclined, playing an assortment of instruments ranging from the tuba to the violin. The memory of this joyous musical upbringing, as well as her passionate belief in the wealth of talent found in the Department of Music’s faculty and student ranks, compelled her to make this generous contribution.”
The donation was celebrated with a public concert Dec. 5 in the LU School of Education auditorium.
