(NC)-With the sizzling summer vacation season upon us, travelling can be fun and exciting, but it's important to plan ahead if you want to have a relaxing, worry-free vacation. By keeping the following travel tips in mind, you can help ensure that you experience an affordable, enjoyable and safe trip.

- Extend your travel search criteria. The day before or
after (your preferred dates) may have lower flight or hotel
fares.
- Always book at least seven days in advance. Many discount
fares require that you make reservations seven, 14, or 21 days
in advance.
- Mid-week flights can be less expensive.
- Prepare a rough itinerary specifying where you will
be at certain points of your trip. Give it to someone so he/she
knows where you can be found in case of an emergency.
- When traveling abroad, notify your family doctor of
your trip. He/she can provide you with necessary medical
requirements.
-  Be sure to verify luggage allowances with your
airline or your travel agent in order to curb unexpected
charges at the airport.
- Buy the correct type of luggage. Structured luggage bags with wheels protect contents and offer independence in airports, while ones without wheels and structure are generally easier to fit into smaller places, but don't protect contents effectively.
- Keep your valuables (jewelry, money, etc.) unexposed.
- Never leave your personal items unattended
(especially on the beach).
- Most importantly, have fun and enjoy yourself.
